There's A Mini Brit-Chick Musical Invasion Going On
The first wave was led by Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse but bringing up the rear flank are a few more really talented ladies, check 'em out:
MUTYA BUENA
Born and raised in London, Mutya Buena discovered her passion for music as a teenager. Mutya’s natural talent for singing seemed to indicate that a career within the industry was inevitable, and -- along with her friends Siobhan Donaghy and Keisha Buchanan -- the rising star started a band called Sugababes at the tender age of 13. A year later, the trio was offered a contract by London Records and the band subsequently began working on their debut album. One Touch, released in December of 2000, didn’t sell quite as well as Mutya had hoped, despite a surfeit of rave reviews and the inclusion of several hit singles (“Overload,” “Soul Sound” and “Run for Cover”).
Undeterred, Mutya soldiered on and stuck with the group through another three albums (including 2002’s Angels with Dirty Faces and 2005’s Taller in More Ways) before embarking on a solo career.
The birth of her first child in March of 2005 reportedly played a substantial role in her decision to leave Sugababes, and in early 2006, Mutya began working on her debut album.
Featuring collaborations with Amy Winehouse and Groove Armada, Real Love -- Mutya’s first solo album -- was released on June 4, 2007, to mostly positive reviews and instantly hit the top 10 charts in her native United Kingdom.

ADELE
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins is a young English soul singer/songwriter from Tottenham, London. Signed to XL Recordings, a music label who primarily focuses on independent talents within Britain, Adele manages to incorporate a variety of flavors into her music, incredibly striking many people with her ability to vocalize lyrics with an extremely soulful voice accompanied by her jazzy beats.
Frequently touted as the UK's next big thing after Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen's respective breakthroughs, Adele has received wide praise from industry insiders and music critics even before she's released her first record. She is the first recipient of the Brit Awards Critics' Choice prize and in January 2008, was voted first in the influential BBC's Sound of 2008 poll.
Her first album, 19, will be released on January 28, 2008 in the UK while her first single, "Chasing Pavements" has reached number two on the UK singles chart in its first week of release.

DUFFY
Thrown out of her school choir at age eight for being too loud, Welsh native Aimee-Ann Duffy poured all her energy into a pink karaoke machine, a gift from Santa. On it she recorded countless original songs, sending CDs off to record companies. "That machine was my dear friend for about six years," the singer says over a latte in a London café. Fast-forward a decade or so: In 2004 some of Duffy's demos reached famed British indie label Rough Trade, which signed her to a management deal. With former Suede guitarist turned producer Bernard Butler guiding her, Duffy, now 23, landed in the U.K. papers and late-night talk shows on the promise of a single song, "Rockferry," a slow panning slice of soul that she wrote in under an hour.
Duffy may have her roots in one of the most bucolic corners of Great Britain, but her understated style channels the sound of far-off Memphis and Detroit. "I don't try to understand it," she says, noting that her parents didn't even own old Stax or Atlantic sides. "I guess I'm an absolute freak!" There is something odd, indeed, about this petite, fair-skinned girl's voice: a smoky, big-lunged, wee-hours shiver that might get Ahmet Ertegun finger-snapping in his grave. Think Dusty Springfield, right down to the peroxided hair and ink-black mascara. Think Amy Winehouse, but with sweet, Motowny vibes instead of a hip-hop attitude and foul mouth.

ESTELLE
Born of a Senegalese mother and father from Grenada, Estelle grew up in West London in a large family of eight brothers and sisters and an extended family of cousins. Her mother was a massive reggae fan and her dad built home made speaker cabinets that shook the whole house. She spent her childhood listening to her parents reggae records and her aunts soul collection. Then she discovered hip hop. "I got into hip hop from my uncle, he was always playing us Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane; he was a bad boy and my mum wasn't really happy that I was hanging out with him." Little did she know that in a few years she would not only be hanging out but performing with the likes of Public Enemy, Talib Kweli and The Roots, Floetry and Terri Walker, and touring with Justin Timberlake. As her own stage beckons, Estelle is set to take up the challenge with the same kind of positivity and determination that has got her this far.
Estelles own tastes range from Kanye West to Teddy Riley. But her main influences lie firmly with two of the most important female figures in hip hop soul Missy Elliot and Mary J. Blige "I like female artists who show that women don't have to strip off or compromise themselves to be recognized as musicians. I can match men head to toe." Estelle recently signed to Atlantic Records US via John Legend's Homeschool Records.
