This poem was written by 7 year old Autum and recited by her in a Peekskill school. She then instructed just the black kids in class to stand and join with her in reciting the "Black Child's Pledge".

Of course the school freaked out to the point that they called every parent in the district to apologize for the poem whether their child heard it or not.

Personally I don't see what all the fuss is about, sure its a bit heavy on the Angela Davis for a 7 year old and I'm sure her father (who just happens to be a poet himself) had some hand in what was written but at least its a thought provoking poem. I can recall some of the lameass crap that used to be recited in my elementary school and would get condescending applause just because the kid was well a kid. Maybe I'm abnormal but I'm an advocate for schools being a place where kids can practice individual thought and have debates on controversial issues even if those issues are a bit over the head of the child at the time. Its better than spending an entire school year memorizing the answers to some stupid standardized test.

Besides that Autum deserves kudos for being brighter than the average 7 year old. Honestly have you ever tried to have a conversation with a 7 year old girl? Its enough to make you slit your own throat.

Autum also should be lauded for at least possessing some kind of racial/social consciousness in an age where most young black children's idea of being socially/racially conscious is knowing all the words to a 50 Cent song and getting cornrows.

Thats the question that has arisen because of the new film, COLOR OF THE CROSS. In the film Jesus, Mary, Judas etc., are all portrayed by black actors with Jesus' race being shown as one of the factors that led to his crucifixion. I'll be curious to see how this plays with the evangelicals who propelled Mel Gibson's THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST to astronomical box office retelling pretty much the same story as COLOR OF THE CROSS.
Will they show the same fervent support for a film featuring a black Jesus? Will black churches push this movie on Sunday's like what was done in support of THE PASSION? Or will the idea of a black Jesus turn away the very audience that this movie is aiming to reach?

The 1920s and 30s were a time when organized crime was an unseen hand playing a significant part in urban life across the country. In no city was that more evident than New York. At the time, law enforcement hadn't made the connection between racketeering and petty crime. Then Eunice Hunton Carter came along.

Born in Atlanta in 1899, to activist parents, Carter became a social worker who practiced in New York and New Jersey for several years before earning a law degree from Fordham University Law School, the first black woman to do so. In 1935, she was appointed by New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia to study situations in Harlem. But soon her street smarts and work as a Women's Court prosecutor with knowledge about prostitution cases, and a theory that the streetwalkers were connected to the mob, got her hired as an assistant district attorney under then-special prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey. Her investigative work showed that when prostitutes were arrested, they all seemed to have the same lawyers, bondsmen and alibis, leading her to theorize that prostitution was an organized racket.

As it turns out, the investigation revealed that mob figures were providing these services to the prostitutes in exchange for 50 percent of their take, which brought in millions for the underworld. Dewey ordered raids on 80 brothels, arresting 100 prostitutes. Carter's questioning of several resulted in evidence that led to New York's most powerful mob figure — Charles "Lucky" Luciano, who was not found to be directly connected to the brothels, but gave a non-interference nod to its operation. Essentially this meant he was, in fact, a crime boss.

"This was the beginning of the end for organized crime they way it operated," said Peter Kougasian, an assistant Manhattan district attorney. "It showed that they were not invulnerable and it also represented an end for major political corruption as well." The case tried by the famed "Twenty Against The Underworld," as Dewey called his team, and resulted in a 30 to 50-year sentence, for Luciano, although he was paroled and deported to Italy in 1946.

After her role in what had been the largest organized crime prosecution in U.S. history, Dewey (who was elected New York District Attorney in 1937, appointed Carter head of the D.A.'s Special Sessions Bureau. In 1945, she entered private practice and continued her activities in organizations including the National Council of Negro Women, the United Nations and on the national board of the YWCA, on which she remained until her death in 1970.

This isn't the first time there's been an incident like this. Back in October '05, two gentlemen dressed as Elmo and Mr. Incredible were jailed for harassing tourists. And Chewie apparently had himself a bit of a temper.

Ore. woman, 84, pleads guilty in boy's sex abuse case

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An 84-year-old woman accused of attempted rape involving an 11-year-old boy in her foster care has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after confessing to having sex with the child, prosecutors said Thursday.

Georgie Audean Buoy, of The Dalles, a Columbia River town about 90 miles east of Portland, will serve 36 months in prison, said Leslie Wolf, chief deputy district attorney for Wasco County.

Buoy originally faced six separate charges but reached a plea agreement on a single charge, Wolf said.

She noted that Buoy had faced eight years in prison on the original charges but her "age and lack of prior criminal convictions had a significant impact with the resolution of this case."

In a taped confession, Buoy admitted having sex with the boy while he was in her care in 2004, Wolf said.

"Obviously, with this case, there is going to be a lot of disbelief so we wanted make sure people knew it was a confession," Wolf said.

She said that Buoy was a longtime member of the community and her church, and volunteered at the county jail.

Church officials were not immediately available for comment. Buoy's attorney, Andrew Carter, also was not immediately available.

Buoy pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted sex abuse in Wasco County Circuit Court in The Dalles. She must register as a sex offender after serving her sentence at the Coffee Creek women's prison in Wilsonville.

Buoy also must pay $5,000 to the victim, as well as up to $7,500 in restitution for counseling.

Buoy will be the oldest female inmate in the Oregon corrections system, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.

But there is a 93-year-old male inmate in the prison system, and a 72-year-old female inmate at Coffee Creek, officials said.

District Attorney Eric Nisley said it was the only case in his memory involving sexual abuse of a boy by an elderly woman — but it was handled like any other case.

"When an adult victimizes a child, the sex of either partner is irrelevant — the damage is done and it's permanent," Nisley said.
